Welcome to the land of Motzi. The people (Motzi) live in small hamlets often in very isolated areas and at an altitude of around 1350 m. It is said that the Motzi are silent, patient but very determined. They have a simple way of living but very rich in terms of spirituality, customs and traditions. With their special relation with nature, they have managed through centuries. They are well-known craftsmen and visiting their hamlets you will admire their picturesque houses and the many household tools they have carved! The symbol of Motzi and Apuseni Mountain is the very special alphorn/tulnic.
The interaction with the locals simply comes natural during a snowshoeing experience. Not only passing by their hamlets but the accommodations and meals are in the mountains with locals. This is rural tourism in Romania; simple, but with comfortable rooms.
During a snowshoeing trip there are so many possibilities; wild life tracking, admire the typical landscapes of Apuseni Mountains discover and learn about the nature wonders of karst world, meet people and communities where old customs, traditions and crafts are still alive, despite the challenges of modern times.
Lets stop and visit a local woodcrafts workshop. Ilisie. At the age of 74 he has more than 60 years of experience in woodcarving, a traditional occupation for Motzi. A visit to the old wooden church at Garda de Sus village, which was raised in the XVIII-th century, is a beautiful sight.
Natural Wonders… Lets visit caves, which huge entrances, galleries and labyrinths of paths that would make you go lost if you are not with a local expert! Scarisoara Ice Cave hosts Scarisoara Glacier - an impressive block of ice of 110.000 cubic meters (the largest in the world, by last researches), 22 meters thick and 3500 years old. Stop by Tauz carstic spring. What seems to be a perfect clear, green lake surrounded by white, vertical stonewalls is actually a spring. A river that got lost through a sinkhole in Coiba Mare Cave bursts out here, 3 km downwards. Vartop Ice Cave, is not that famous for ice but for its limestone jewelries and the 25000 years old footprints in the limestone ground left by Homo Fossils!
It is up to you how long you want to discover fabulous landscapes and/or interaction with local mountain communities. In this area nature and local rural culture is a natural ingredients! Normally you hike from three to six – seven hours per day. Depending on your request and how much you want to challenge yourself! Unfortunately we cannot guarantee snow these days…! The climate has changed a lot and it is more difficult predict. But the weather forecast is pretty accurate, and the area is beautiful to visit snow or not!
