To experience the best of the southwestern part of Norway, a good place to start is Bergen - the gateway to the fjords. Our local specialist in Bergen will be happy to meet you and show you around introducing you to the city from a local's perspective and give you insights on what you expect for the rest of your trip along the coast.
After a day or two in Bergen, travel by ferry (or car) to the Fjord Coast, as far West as you can get in Norway. It is rough and beautiful, wild and wet. You will experience a landscape that keeps changing and every corner makes you “awww”. The variety spans from narrow fjords and steep mountains to small islands far out at sea, all on the same day! This is an entry point for some of the best fjord experiences, located on the coast in the county of Sogn & Fjordane, between Bergen and Ålesund.
From this area, a recommended destination next is Sognefjord and Balestrand for a few nights, and potentially include the famous Flåm Railway to Myrdal where you embark the train to Oslo to Bergen. Alternatively, you can travel further North to Ålesund- known as one of Norway`s prettiest cities!
Location: Bergen, Sognefjord, Kalvåg, Værlandet, Balestrand, Flåm, Oslo, Ålesund
Best time to travel: From May to August
Suitable for how many people: From 2-6 people
Where you will stay: Hotels, guesthouses, and lodges
Activities you can do: Cycle, boat trip, village experience, hiking, road trip, explore nature
The fjord coast just outside Bergen consists of thousands of small Islands! The major islands are connected by bridges and roads that will take you as far as you get off the Norwegian coast. Bulandet and Værlandet are one of Norway's most western archipelagos with an all year community.
The fjord coast has a dramatic and strong history dating back to the Viking age. There where several bloody battles just outside the fjord coast!
We recommend visiting Værlandet, a small island with only 9km with 200 inhabitants. A perfect place to stay to get to know the island culture better! Fishing and fish farming are the important industries, but they are also famous in Italy for exporting greenstone breccia!
We also recommend hiking Hornelen- the tallest sea cliff in Northern Europe 860 meters above sea level!
It is also recommended to take the Hurtigruten Cruise from Bergen to Ålesund - known as the prettiest city in Norway. On arrival, you can rent a car and drive to the historic hotel Øye and spend a night there to explore Hjørundfjord and Geiranger. From there, you can drive to the fjord coast and visit Kalvåg which known as a living hotel. If you enjoy a good atmosphere, good food, and an awesome coastal culture - this is the perfect spot for you!
