• The cotton trail of the Gambia

Serving as the regional headquarter of the Upper River Region, Basse is an important town Far East of the Gambia. The marked is one of the most important in the region and connects Senegal, Mali, Guinea and Guinea-Bissau. This is also the region where cotton had set roots decades ago. Meet the cotton farmers that live in the most picturesque village in The Gambia.

Further on make a stop in Janjanbureh. Another cultural hub, and central town along River Gambia. This is also where you can take a boat-ride to see hippos and Chimpanzees before heading to the village of Njau. Meet the Women Initiative that is working on handicraft and have also spun the cotton.

Cross the river to the south bank, and drive down to the coast. While you are along the coast, meet our cooperative of weavers, located in Brikama before heading down to an eco-lodge where the tailor also has his workshop. Combine with a few days on the beach!

There you go – the cotton trail. A beautiful way to explore the local handicraft, meeting people and places while seeing the length of the country and its beauty!

Location: Gunjur, Kaur, Bansang, Sinchu Sura. Gambia.
Best time to travel: November – May.
Recommended stay: 4 – 5 days. We recommend this experience to be combined with a week at an eco lodge along the coast to enjoy the beach.

Activities you can do: Meet local craftsmen and women, boat-trip to see chimpanzee and hippos, create your own cloths!
