Responsible Tourist
Travel is about discovering new places and meet new people. We urge our travellers to be a responsible tourist and act thereafter. A traveller needs to take some considerations into account when visiting places. Protect places, cultures and environment and let every visit be mutual benefit for host and guest.
Before you travel you should read as much as possible about the country you are going to visit. Ask questions from your operator, search the internet and bookshops. It is useful to learn a few words of the local language and their customs when greeting and meeting new people.
When you meet the local people remember that you are a guest. Be open and respect their way of living. Learn and experience. Be extra careful when visiting holy places like churches, temples or sacred grounds. Be aware of how your dress according to local customs. Always show respect for elderly people regardless status and work. Show respect for beggars and think twice before you give anything to children. You may encourage them to continue begging. Ask before taking pictures of people and do not interrupt is the situation don't allow. Some places you may pay a small fee for taking photos. Act polite and do not provoke. You should also be careful where you smoke and drink alcohol. Many small communities smoking is not yet a problem and travellers should not give any ideas about smoking. Some areas also have strict rules about smiling and drinking. Alcohol is in many places a big social problem.
Where you are staying be careful with usage of water. Many places water is a shortage so shower instead of bathing, don't let the tapping water run while brushing your teeth etc. Do not use more towels then necessary. Turn off lamps and other electrical equipments when they are not in use.
A part of travelling is experiencing new food. Try local dishes in local restaurants. Do not eat all your meals at one place - but spread your money and increase your experience by trying out different restaurants. Buy local food and contribute to the local economy.
If you are planning to do excursions there are many ways of being responsible. Support the excursions that contribute to the local community. Choose environmental friendly organisers even if it cost you a bit more money. Use local transportations hen possible and don't be afraid to ask questions from here you buy the excursion.
Shopping is one way of contributing but be considered what you are buying. Do not buy products made of endangered species or plants. Original culture heritage is not souvenirs! Do not purchase or take "trophies" from places you are visiting. You can buy copies in the souvenir shop. Bargain is culture many places. But don't let in become a sport - pay a fair price that both parties are happy about. Buy locally produced goods and services and be interested in here the items are being produced and made. Don't buy drugs - you may end up spending yeas in prison for one stupid and unnecessary act.
When you are in the nature be careful to your surroundings. Leave wild flowers and plants and enjoy them in their free spirit. Respect wild animals and keep good distance for your own safety and to not disturb. Don't feed wild animals or cause unnecessary noise. Do not throw trash in the nature or in the street. If there is no bin - take you waste with you. Leave no trace in the nature.
