Christmas Caroling in Ukraine

December 17, one week to Christmas. Did you know that one of the worlds´ dearest Christmas melody is from Ukraine? "Carol of the Bells"...

In Ukraine they celebrate Christmas in January. You can take part in the local experience.

This Christmas song is still among the most traditional Christmas carols in Ukraine. The beautiful choral arrangement was done by Ukrainian composer Mykola Leontovych in 1916. English lyrics were later added by an American composer Peter J. Wilhousky in 1936. His lyric is not based on the Ukrainian one. The melody reminded him about the beautiful ringing bells...The original Ukrainian text tells the tale of a swallow flying into a household to proclaim the plentiful and bountiful year that the family will have!

... the English lyrics starts off with; Hark how the bells, sweet silver bells All seem to say, "throw cares away" Christmas is here, bringing good cheer To young and old, meek and the bold. The video clip is made by Ukraine’s famous folk rock band Vopli Vidopliasova. To quote our partners in Ukraine Active Ukraine "Inspiring! Gorgeous! And so Christmassy Ukrainian!"

Have a look at the video below. You have to watch it to the end, because it ends well in all good Christmas spirit! ...and do you know what? I think I actually like the Ukrainian version best! Carol of the Bells - or Shchedryk ("Bountiful Evening") as it is called in Ukraine.
